2011, and the year that was.

2011 has arrived. The year that was seems to have flown by so quickly for me that I’m still feeling a little jetlagged! It’s been a year of tremendous change.

  • I have married a woman who loves me far more than is wise for a woman who wishes to appear sane, and I love her more than I dared to ever dream I could.
  • I’ve ditched (with extreme prejudice) a job that was eating me alive, and have taken a new one that seems to be a perfect fit.
  • I’ve been bitten by a cat and countless birds, been chased by hornets, run into a tree at full speed, cracked two ribs, and contracted pneumonia.
  • I’ve been hospitalized twice (once for the pneumonia, once for the cat bite), and had surgery twice (not counting the abortive attempt when the anesthesiologist couldn’t find my airway with both hands and a laryngoscope).
  • I’ve moved to a new house in a new city in a new state, changed my ham radio callsign, upgraded my ham radio license to the highest available class, and begun mixing sound at a new church.
  • I’ve gained three foster birds, made some new friends, and left behind, in Georgia, many old friends and beloved family members.
  • I’ve gained a recumbent bicycle, and lost a boat and a good number of pounds of body mass, not counting the pound of hair.

It’s a new year now, and at this time next year, there are some things I’d really like to be able to say.

In no particular order, these are my resolutions for 2011.

  • I will blog at least once per calendar week, without fail.
  • I will remain on my self-prescribed high protein, calorie-limited diet, allowing myself no more than one “diet vacation” day per calendar month.
  • I will make an attempt to reconnect with my estranged maternal family members.
  • I will return to practicing the art of photography on a regular basis.
  • I will devote less time to television viewing, and more time to reading.
  • I will keep in better touch with my friends, because I value them.
  • I will find time to search for at least 52 geocaches within the next 12 months, averaging one per week.
  • I will write at least three songs this year.
  • I will end this year owing far less money than I do now. [Update 1/5/11: Uh-oh. Looks like I’m not the only one with resolutions.]

I’ve got a few others, but they relate to my job, and are therefore classified top-secret. If you want to read about those, I’m afraid you’ll have to wait for them to appear on WikiLeaks.

  1. And you will take your wife on at least half of those geocache adventures, ravage her as often as circumstances/health permits and vow not to roll your eyes and act incredulous when she tells you how wonderful you are and how much she loves you.

  2. It’s very ambitious to set resolutions for 2010 at this point.

  3. You’ve changed it! Now I just look silly.

  4. We can’t have that! 🙂 I had typed 2010, just as I can look forward to doing on all my checks and forms throughout January.

  5. I like the geocaching resolution! I found 20 or so today so I’d be well on my way with that one! I’m going to try and blog at least twice a week. I completely failed to blog at all last year.
Good luck with your endeavours !

  6. WOW what a year.
I especially like your intention of getting back in touch with family.
Years ago, I began tracing my family tree and this led me to contacting family that I hadn’t seen for many years. I’m so glad that I did.
Very best wishes to you and to Alison for 2011.

  7. Wow… that was all this year? Good work! (Apart from the hornets, tree, cat bite etc. etc. you get the idea).

Good luck, and best wishes for 2011.

  8. Inspirational as ever, Scotty!
